Honduras: October 2023

My experience in Guachipilincito, Honduras was incredibly humbling and impactful. Not only was I able to provide medical care to the local community, I learned about the impacts of global health, embraced a new culture, and established lifelong relationships.

Upon traveling to our destination and clinic, we toured other health care facilities and were introduced to the local health care system and schools. I saw patients of all ages, providing physical exams and any required medications, treatments, or procedures. As an osteopath, I was able to use my skills and perform OMT, including trigger point injections. I also participated in two educational programs. One consisted of teaching local children dental hygiene, providing toothbrushes, and applying fluoride treatments to each child. The second was a lecture geared towards women’s health regarding birth spacing and contraception.

Most notable were the home visits to those who were unable to travel the rugged and mountainous terrain, where I was able to appreciate the living conditions. Despite the modest conditions, I was met with much hospitality and was privileged to be able to provide medical care to the amazing Guachi community. On the last day, a thank you celebration was held at the town square, involving performances and dancing.

I am grateful for this lifechanging opportunity and hope to expand my work in global health in the future.
