My volunteer work in Kolkata, India, with the Institute for Indian Mother & Child has provided me with invaluable insights and diverse clinical experiences. In an outdoor clinic setting, I encountered numerous patients needing care for chronic infections, often worsened by limited access to treatment. To aide in care, I was able to conduct wound care and administer injections.

In Daki, a rural village clinic, I worked alongside local physicians to diagnose and treat prevalent conditions consisting mostly of skin diseases of tinea and scabies, diabetes and uncontrolled hypertension. It was interesting to assist in facilitation of lifestyle discussions for chronic diseases and compare medication management with those common in the U.S.

I was also able to practice obstetric and gynecologic care, conducting routine prenatal exams and addressing issues like interstitial cystitis, vaginal discharge, menopausal symptoms, and contraception. A notable encounter involved a woman seeking medication-induced abortion, which highlighted cultural challenges in accessing reproductive healthcare. Additionally I participated in teaching women from the villages about contraception, arthritis, skin infections, and cholesterol.

Beyond my clinical duties, I cherished the cultural immersion and community engagement, from teaching women and playing with children to marveling at historical temples. The gratitude and resilience of the local community reinforced my commitment to medicine and service, affirming my calling to help others in diverse and meaningful ways.
