Pakistan: January 2025
I had the privilege of working with Indus Hospital, a fully charity funded hospital in Karachi Pakistan, to help support its mission of providing a broad range of emergency, inpatient, and outpatient services to patients free of cost. While there, I had the opportunity to work in the Emergency Department and help teach hands on skills and procedures to local clinicians to empower them to deliver emergency care to their patients. Our sessions ranged from reviewing simulated medical cases to hands- on skills sessions. These included reviewing the management of precipitous deliveries, central line placement, and even rare procedures such as lateral canthotomies. In addition, we covered ultrasound skills and the approach to trauma and mass casualty incidents.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my trip to Indus hospital was witnessing the immediate impact of the training we provided. I was able to see the local clinicians gain confidence during their hands on skills sessions, which directly translates to improved outcomes in emergency care for patients. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of education in global health. Providing sustainable skills ensures a lasting benefit for both healthcare providers and their patients. It was incredibly fulfilling to contribute to a mission that prioritizes both patient care and professional development, and I look forward to continuing similar initiatives in the future.
