I started planning my trip to Guayaquil in January, 2018 after receiving an e-mail request from Healing the Children seeking volunteer nurses for a medical mission to Guayaquil Ecuador to work with a team of surgeons. The purpose of the trip was to address Ecuadorian children’s eye problems, more particularly strabismus. Strabismus is a weakening of eye muscles which manifests itself by crossing of the eyes.

This was not my first trip to Guayaquil nor was it was my first surgical trip that dealt with issues with the eyes. I had previously been on ten prior trips to Thailand, Peru, Ecuador, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic.
